Pet Travel to & from Spain
Overview
If you just wish to take your Pet with you to Spain and have no intension of returning to the UK, then at present all you need is an Export Health Certificate, issued in the UK, to allow your pet to enter the country. It is different from the PETS scheme and your pet may be refused entry if you do not have the certificate.
Only certain sea, air and rail routes allow transportation of pets you should check with the operator before booking. Another option is to contact one of the specialist Pet Travel companies; they can arrange all aspects of the transportation for you.
Pet Travel Scheme
The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is the system that allows owners of pet dogs, cats and ferrets in the UK to take their pets to other European Union (EU) countries, and return with them to the UK.
Spain is one of the countries that partakes in the scheme and this includes the islands but not Ceuta and Melilla.
To get a Pet Passport the cat or dog, including guide and hearing dogs, must meet certain conditions, it will have to be:
- Identified with a microchip that meets an ISO specification so that it can be read by a standard microchip reader.
- Vaccinated against rabies (in accordance with the recommendation on the vaccine manufacturer's data sheet)
- Blood tested at an EU-approved laboratory and get a satisfactory result, usually within 30 days of vaccination.
- Treated against ticks and tapeworms.
If you wish to re-enter the UK with your pet you will need the wait at least six months after a successful blood test result and have the following documentation:
- The PETS re-entry certificate issued by a vet in the UK, certifying that the above conditions have been met before you travel.
- An official Certificate of Treatment against a potentially dangerous type of tapeworm and ticks, which must be carried out by a vet between 24 and 48 hours before re-entering the UK. This treatment has to be done each time you enter the UK.
- The Declaration of Residence which you will be asked to complete to declare that your pet has not been outside any of the qualifying countries in the six months before entering the UK.
