Driving in Spain

Overview

To drive in Spain you must be over 18 years old and must ensure you carry the following with you in the car:

  • Passport.
  • Driving Licence.
  • Valid Insurance documentation (green card if in procession of one).
  • Vehicle registration documents.
  • Red warning triangles, spare bulbs and yellow reflective jackets.
  • Glasses, wearers must carry a spare pair in the car.

If you are stopped by the police, you will be asked to produce all of the above documentation; if you don’t have it you will be fined.

Remember in Spain they drive on the right.

Other points:

  • Children in cars: Children under 12 cannot travel in the front unless using a suitably adapted restraint system. In the rear, passengers under 135cm tall must use specially adapted safety devices and restraints.
  • Seat belts are obligatory in both the front and back of the car.
  • Drinking and driving: Spain has stricter drink drive rules than the UK. Over 0.05 per cent and you could face anything from a severe fine, withdrawal of your licence, up to imprisonment.
  • Speeding, spot fines apply for non-residents, these are calculated on how much over the speed limit you were and therefore can be hefty. Residents face fines, penalty points and even bans.

  • Mobile phones: if caught using one whilst driving fines can be up to 300E.
